Keith Allred today responded to Butch Otter’s attempt to
buy time on the gas tax issue.
“We’ve had four studies,
and we’ve been deliberating on this issue for three years. Each one of
those studies concludes that I’m right on this issue. It’s not about
campaign rhetoric. It’s about taking appropriate action.”
On
Monday Allred proposed that Idaho level the playing field for everyday
Idahoans and small businesses, and reduce Idaho’s 25-cent gas tax. The
proposal comes on the heels of the latest study to say the same thing:
That Idaho car and pickup drivers are paying more than their fair share
for Idaho highway maintenance and construction, and heavy trucks are
underpaying.
“How many more studies does Butch Otter
need? Is he satisfied to study this to death?” asked Allred. “I think
not. Idaho families and small businesses need action, not more
deliberation from their leaders about a basic pocketbook issue.”
As the Moscow-Pullman Daily News wrote in an editorial last week:
“No matter how you slice it, heavy trucks aren't paying their share. And
your sedan, RV or pickup is paying more than its share. Much more.”
Keith Allred said again today that he agrees, and it’s time
to bring fair play to Idaho’s highways.
